Michael Edward Mills (born December 17, 1958 in Orange County, California) is an American multi-instrumentalist and composer who is a founding member of the alternative rock group R.E.M.. Though known primarily as a bass guitarist, keyboardist, and backing vocalist, his musical repertoire includes many other keyboards, guitars, strings, wind and percussion instruments. He also contributes to a majority of the band's musical compositions.
