Lost in Translation is a 2003 American film starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson and directed by Sofia Coppola; it was Coppola's second feature film, after The Virgin Suicides (1999). The film blends elements of comedy as well as more serious themes common in drama films. Upon release, the film was a major critical success, and went on to be nominated for four Academy Awards, including: Best Picture, Best Actor for Bill Murray, and Best Director for Sofia Coppola; Coppola won for Best Original Screenplay.
